FBLA Leaps in Layton at State
FBLA students started their day packing and preparing for the long road trip to Layton. The day of state coincided with the ACT, so many students used their time to study and multitask. The trip started on Monday, the 10th, with departure at 2 o’clock, and ended on Wednesday, the 13th, with their return at 5 p.m. The students described their time as mainly spent preparing for events, memorizing the times they needed to be present, and enjoying their free time away from school.
Melaina Bork, a junior at Juab who placed 8th in Visual Design, described her day-to-day experience: “Wake up. Check the event and see what you have to do… the rest of the day, you B.S. what you want to do.” Liesel Kretchmer, a junior who placed 6th in Digital Animation, spoke about how you could socialize with other FBLA students, do homework, go to the pool and swim—essentially, just make sure you are at your event on time and then enjoy the rest of the trip. “But also sitting through really boring, long meetings, and late nights playing games.” Tyler Chappel, a junior who placed 4th in Human Resources, said, “I’m not going to be able to fall asleep tonight,” and then proceeded to pull an all-nighter.
Dawson Miller placed 2nd in Business Communications, 9th in Financial Math, 3rd in Business Ethics, and 10th in Computer Game Simulations. Gabe Settle placed 8th in Business Communications, 4th in Financial Math, 3rd in Organizational Leadership, and 1st in Public Policy. Jasmine Branch placed 1st in Personal Finance and 5th in Word Processing. Maddox Karr placed 3rd in Banking and Finance. Alvin Yuan placed 3rd in Business Ethics. Lilli, Jayne, and Conner placed 4th in Intro to Business. Brevan Miller placed 9th in Coding & Programming and 10th in Computer Game Simulations. Kenzie Slater got 8th in Impromptu, and Porsha Oliver got 7th in Job Interview.
A huge congratulations to the following students who participated in state this semester. FBLA is a great opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones and explore a wide variety of topics. Lots of presentations, speeches, and meetings are involved, but it all looks impressive on applications and resumes.
