Yapping at 3A Speech & Debate State

On March 14 and 15, the Juab High School Speech and Debate team competed at 3A state. The competition took place at Ogden High School along with 1A State. The team left after school on Friday and stayed the night at a nearby hotel before making the drive back.

Friday was a speech day, and Saturday was a debate day. There were at least seven other schools at the tournament with a 20-point difference between Juab and 4th place.

Juab placed 3rd overall with 85 points. The placements are as follows: National Extempt: Jacob Davis 4th, Melaina Bork 6th, Interp: Anna Petersen 1st, Alice Bingham 5th, Rory Allred 6th, Impromptu: Macee Ercanbrack 1st, Informative: Kirsten Coray 1st, Oratory: Jayme Cragun 2nd, Congress: Gabby Petersen 1st, Kenzee Slater 5th, Public Forum: Kirsten Coray and Jacob Davis Quarter Finalist.

State marks the ending of the team’s official season. It also marks the last state of the current coach. Morgan Palmer began coaching three years ago and is an undefeated region champion. This is her last year as head coach with the hope she returns next year as assistant coach.

The team has one last tournament. There are no state events, only ones designed to make you laugh. The tournament will take place in Beaver on April 25, 2025.
