Mind Over Matter for our Juab Sports

Mind over matter is a powerful way to approach any big game or challenge in life. When the time comes to step onto the court for a big basketball game, it’s easy to feel nervous, but there are ways to calm those nerves and focus on what really matters. I wanted to see how this affected JHS students, so I interviewed members of the boys basketball team to see how they prepare for a game.

The first person I interviewed was Gabe Settle, a junior on the boys team this year. Gabe Settle has a good approach to handling his pre-game nerves. He said, “I just try to block out any distractions, and I focus on playing my own game and controlling what I can control.” Gabe’s mindset shows just how confident he is in his own abilities. By focusing on what he can control, he isn’t letting outside pressures affect his performance. This kind of thinking helps him stay calm and lets his teammates depend on him on the court.

Jacob Rowley, another junior on the team, has a similar approach when preparing for a big game. He shared, “I go over my previous games and figure out my game plan and use my experience to my benefit.” Jacob understands that the more you play and experience, the more you can trust your skills. His approach shows that confidence comes from knowing you’ve been through tough moments before and can do it again. It’s also a reminder that with a solid game plan you can succeed in any game.

For many people, getting ready for a big game or a major moment in life can feel overwhelming. However, Gabe and Jacob show us there are ways to mentally prepare for these moments. Whether it’s blocking out distractions, reflecting on past experiences, or focusing on your own game, mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation. With the right mindset, anyone can face challenges with confidence and perform at their best.
