Drill Team
Drill Team: A Blend of Dedication, Teamwork, and Artistry
Drill team is a dynamic form of dance that combines teamwork, athleticism, and artistry. Performed at high schools, colleges, and in competitions, drill teams showcase synchronized movements and precise coordination. Beyond mastering technique, dancers develop discipline, resilience, and personal growth. These routines reflect both individual and collective excellence. Drill team is not just a physical challenge, but a mental one, requiring passion and dedication, which makes it a truly beautiful art form. In this article, I’ll share insights from drill team coaches and head drill mistresses, starting with Coach Lisa Blacket.
The 2024-25 season has been a standout year for the JHS ProVita, with 31 members strong, supported by excellent team officers, parents, and the school community. The team has supported and performed at halftime during JHS sporting events, assemblies, and many community events, including parades. The dancers have worked hard to improve both on and off the dance floor. This season, the team read Mind Gym, a book that proved beneficial for building mental strength. Team officers have put in a lot of effort preparing conditioning workouts, team bonding activities, and a variety of team-building events. “Monday Motivation,” presented by team members, helped strengthen team spirit and unity, which proved valuable in competition settings. As a result, ProVita currently ranks third in the RPIs for the 3A classification, one of the most competitive groups. The team competed in three invitationals, earning Overall 3A Winners at the Rocky Mountain Drill Team Invitational, with individual honors in the drill down: 1st place went to Sharlee Krogh, and 2nd place to Brighton Thomsen. ProVita also placed in the top slots at both the Bountiful Invitational and Best of Drill Invitationals, competing against some of the toughest teams in the 3A classification. The team earned judges’ choice awards for their choreography and costumes, with each routine reflecting a unique style, music choice, and costuming. Coach Marci Rasch oversees the team’s choreography with contributions from the officers and team members. “Throughout the season, we explore many types of dance,” says Coach Marci. “Since 1989, I’ve had the privilege of serving as head coach, and overall, this has been an incredibly positive experience. As a coach, I’ve learned you can’t please everyone, so I focus on making decisions in the best interest of the team. Watching athletes who share my passion for dance rise to the occasion and be their best, both on and off the floor, is truly rewarding. The best part of coaching is seeing athletes work hard to achieve their goals.”
