Finland’s Delicious Christmas Food

Christmas in Finland is a huge deal. Part of what makes Christmas so magical in Finland is the beautiful nature, and snowy scenes from all around the country. The traditions are also very important, but arguably the biggest part of Christmas is the food. Finnish Christmas food has a lot of different components starting from breakfast to multiple dinner foods and sweet treats.

Most traditional Finnish families start their Christmas morning by eating rice oatmeal with cinnamon and sugar on top. It is a popular favorite thing about Christmas because it tastes so good. The tradition is to put one almond in the porridge kettle. The one who finds it from their porridge gets good luck and can wish for something.

For Christmas dinner there are many options for people to choose from. We do our Christmas ham overnight and it lasts really long because of its size. We have a lot of food that we call Christmas boxes. It’s typical to put potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, and more in the Christmas boxes. Karelian pie is also a very big deal. Some people like to put an egg butter mix on top of it and some people like it better without it. We have bread that we eat with our dinner and it’s called “Joulu Limppu”. It doesn’t really translate to English but it’s bread that people eat only on christmas and it has a unique taste that is really different from other bread.

Star-tart is the biggest traditional sweet treat in Finland. These delicious treats are really easy to make and it is rare to find a person who doesn’t absolutely love it. It has plum marmalade and powdered sugar on top of it.

Along with all the yummy food, there are the tasty drinks that the Finnish have around Christmas time. Some people like to put almonds and raisins in the drink and some like it without, either way It’s really good.

To conclude, Finnish food is very unique and delicious. It is very different from American food. The food plays an important role in the magic of Christmas time.
