Creating a Space for Gamers

The high school gaming club offers students a dedicated space to connect, compete, and grow through a shared passion for gaming. Founded by Mr. Clark, who has always loved gaming, the club provides a welcoming environment where students can bond over popular titles and develop valuable skills. From classics like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. to modded Minecraft, the club’s game selection caters to a wide range of interests. Although Rocket League is approved, the club hasn’t played it yet, and some games, like Roblox and StarCraft, face technical challenges this year.

Game Selection and Restrictions

Students often suggest games they’d like to play, but each one must meet strict guidelines. Games containing violence, mature content, or inappropriate themes are off-limits. The advisor reviews each suggestion, sometimes seeking approval from the school board. This process ensures that all games align with school policies, but there’s still room for discretion, allowing a wide variety of engaging options.

More Than Just Playing Games

Beyond entertainment, Mr. Clark sees gaming as an educational tool. Similar to traditional sports, gaming can motivate students and foster skills like hand-eye coordination, problem-solving, and quick reflexes. Scientific studies support these benefits, and while Mr. Clark acknowledges gaming’s potential downsides, they believe responsible gaming offers more pros than cons.

Building Skills and Resolving Conflicts

The club emphasizes teamwork and personal growth. Conflicts are rare, but when they occur, they’re handled directly through open communication, reinforcing the club’s positive culture. Members are also held to academic standards, maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5 to participate and staying under 10 attendance points. This balance ensures that students stay focused on their studies while enjoying their passion.

Looking to the Future

The club has already participated in events like the Ken Garff eSports tournament at UVU, gaining valuable experience. Mr. Clark hopes to expand these opportunities, establishing a competitive season similar to traditional sports. Future plans include joining regular tournaments and fostering deeper connections among members, ensuring the gaming club remains a place for students to connect, compete, and grow.
