Juab is on the Road to Local Universities
Is College Right for you?
Juab School students had the opportunity to sign up for visits to the University of Utah and Utah Valley University. Their originally scheduled field trip was unfortunately canceled due to intense traffic. However, this wasn’t their only field trip option. Just a few weeks ago, students had the chance to visit Utah Valley University. It was a valuable opportunity for high school students to experience college life—even if it made the college students there feel like zoo animals as we walked around in large groups. These field trips provide students with a great opportunity to explore what they might want to do after high school. Earning a degree can be challenging, but it offers many career options. Trade school is also a good option for students who want to focus on a specific field of study.
We asked a few students about their experiences on multiple field trips, with the University of Utah visit being the most eventful, as it was entirely canceled due to traffic accidents. Kamryn Whiteley, a junior at our school, attended the field trip to UVU. When asked what she was most excited about, she responded, “I heard the student life is very involved at UVU, so I was excited to see in what ways.” If you follow Kamryn on Instagram, you may have seen her recent post about the field trip, where she shared her opinions quietly into a tiny microphone. We continued the interview by asking about her view on college: whether it had changed or if her peers had a change in their perspectives. Kamryn shared, “The view I had on college didn’t change much, but it was cool to see the difference between UVU and the other colleges I’ve toured.” When we asked if she’d like to mention anything else, she responded, “You can go bowling on campus.” A fun way to ease the stress of college might be to throw a heavy ball down a slippery alley at surprisingly stable pins.
Casey Delatorre, a junior at our school, was asked similar questions. When asked what she was most excited about, she said, “I was excited to see what the campus looked like, and I was also excited to see the hallway dedicated entirely to future mechanics learning to work on vehicles.” UVU offers many career opportunities and paths for students, so it makes sense why they would want to highlight those features. When asked if her view on college had changed, Casey shared, “My view on college changed a bit. I thought it would be boring and overwhelming, but at UVU, there are many opportunities for students to have fun. There are also pods and rooms where students can work silently if they want to.” Lastly, we asked if she would like to mention anything else of interest. Casey explained that the food options at UVU were really helpful for students on a budget who didn’t want to fall into the unhealthy habit of eating fast food.
