J Hill

The J hill has been an important part of Nephi culture since 1851, the year Nephi began to grow. It was when Nephi was first founded and was originally named Salt Creek. Since then, the J hill has been set up on the hill, displaying that bright chalky white.

The J Hill has been a great contribution to the many things we have here in Nephi. For those who have been able to hike up there, it has been able to produce many great memories with friends and family through the years.

The J Hill has been a great place for the sports of Juab High School. From what we’ve been told from Juab wrestlers, they will sometimes go up there really early in the morning as a team and go on runs in the dark all the way to the top of the J hill. This shows the greatness, extremeness, and beauty of Juab that comes from this small area.

There have also been some problems with kids riding atvs on and around the J Hill, and this has drawn some controversy with the Nephi sheriffs since you’re not allowed to ride atvs up there, and kids have been doing it anyway, and if caught, sheriffs have been running away.

These mischievous kids have been a problem for ranchers that have cattle up there because the kids have been vandalizing and destroying their property. In the article, “The Times News,” it says, “We are having a real problem with those who cut fences in that area. The cattlemen can’t keep the fences up.” This has been another problem and controversy that has shot through this small town of Nephi.

Another point to bring up is the tradition of the seniors of Juab High School whitewashing the J on the J hill. This has been a tradition that is brought up every year in the month of May. This has been a fun tradition that I am sure is going to carry on for many years to come.
