The Unexpected Fall of the Undefeated Season
by Jacob Rowley
After a promising victory against the Millard Eagles, we had a devastating loss against the Layton Christian Eagles. We hosted the eagles at our home field last Friday and had an excellent turnout by the students and the community.
The game started out with very ideal weather conditions. However, Juab’s offense struggled to move the ball down the field all game. The tension on the sidelines grew, as did the frustration from the team. Layton Christian broke the ice by scoring the first touchdown of the game.(7,0)
The game then went on a dry spell, neither team scoring any points. Then momentum shifted when Layton Christian fumbled the ball in the red zone. Outstanding senior, Jay Rowley picked up the ball and ran an 80-yard scoop-and-score. (7,7) Afterwards, Juab’s offense started to weaken. But our defense held strong until the end of the game. Our amazing players can only take so much. Near the end of the game, Layton Christian scored two quick touchdowns. (7,21)
Senior Jay Rowley is hopeful that the team just has to make slight adjustments, and then they’ll be just fine. Buea Halverson, our quarterback, explained our problems as, “We lack teamwork and belief in each other. Also, our players are scared to hit.”
Trust did seem to be a little low in the game. But we can count on Juab’s excellent Coach Downard to fix these problems and prepare Juab for the rest of the season.
Layton Christian is not a bad loss. Juab should hold their heads high. It was a very entertaining game to watch. It is still the beginning of the season, and Juab is not refined to its finest point yet. The team will be playing South Summit this Friday. Everyone should show up and watch as Juab accomplishes amazing things.
