My Love Letter to Beater Cars

Some people work with what they got, and for most kids it’s a beater car. I’m one of those kids… and it’s interesting. I own a tiny little truck, his name is Lil’ Red. It’s surprisingly fun. Almost all of the steering and the suspension wants to fall off or break off, but it doesn’t. So it’s honestly a 25% chance I don’t make it home – not from the things breaking – it just might stop running.

Put all that aside and my truck is fun. I love him very much. He’s reliable, starts every time, smooth transmission, has a great heater, and has an excellent bed size. My check engine light has been on as long as I can remember. Don’t worry, I checked… there’s still an engine there. I don’t know why it’s on. I can tell you this; the scariest thing is when the check engine light turns off.

Everything about Lil’ Red adds character, and that’s the best thing about beater cars. When people get a brand spanking new car, fresh off the market, they treat it like a baby. They freak out when you so much as look at it. That’s not the case with a beater car. Someone scratches the paint? It’s fine. Friend dents the side? Don’t worry ‘bout it. Make a mess in the car? No big deal! As long as the car runs there’s nothing wrong with it, and nothing can ever be wrong with it. However… I do miss AC 🙁
